Dev Log #4: Cleaner Visuals, Fewer Stutters

This article describes work in progress, not changes already released to the live client.

Small things that add up

We added an optional frame rate counter, quieted down the debug panel so it stays out of your way by default, made ground-targeted skills like Meteor wait for you to confirm where you want them to land instead of firing instantly, and fixed the instrument playing interface so all ten note slots show up on extended instruments like the Banjo. The launcher also picked up a featured banner and a visible version number.

Fixing what visual parity broke

As we kept matching the new graphics system to how the game originally looked, we caught and fixed a black screen bug on the fallback graphics mode, corrected several skin and effect rendering issues including strange transparent overlaps and incorrect shine, and restored the heat shimmer and colors around fire effects. Meteor and other area effects now time their impact correctly again, and tree foliage got its lighting and canopy detail back, along with a further pass on overall outdoor color.

Fewer stutters, fewer glitches

We fixed a freeze that could happen right as a fight started while its effects were loading for the first time, an audio glitch that caused footsteps and music to cut out in crowded areas, and a bug that made the interface secretly reload itself every frame, causing stutter. We also fixed looping effects that kept running instead of clearing away when they should, fixed a stutter when entering an area with a lot of players or monsters spawning at once, corrected a sound sync issue, and adjusted player collision size to be more accurate on foot and while mounted. Falling into water no longer freezes your character in place, NPCs missing a specific animation now fall back to a normal idle pose instead of a broken one, and fire effects have their proper white hot glowing core back.

Guard and mount controls

Right click now correctly draws your weapon and raises your guard when it was sheathed, and while mounted, right click no longer triggers an unwanted dodge and left click properly uses your mount's skill. We also fixed a rare crash connected to the old dodge behavior and closed a way the mounted guard could be bypassed.
